People new to \u201eWir\nSind Paten\u201c often wonder what it is we do here, who we are and how we found our\nway to each other and became part of this international family. In an effort to\ngive you an insight into the core principles of the organisation, we\ninterviewed one of the most hardworking and active members of our family, Aziz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Aziz is a 27-year-old\nyoung adult and, like many of our volunteers, has a migration background. He\nfled Syria following the hostilities in the Middle East and since then he has\nfound refuge in Germany, where he was given the opportunity of a new beginning.\nAziz has not only successfully integrated himself in the new host community; he\nis now a full-time student of Computer Science in the fourth semester at the\nUniversity of Leipzig. In his free time, he enjoys watching football and films,\ngoing on walks and swimming. Most\nimportantly, he likes helping people and therefore spends a lot of his time at\n\u201eWir Sind Paten,\u201c which he first discovered in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Aziz claims that\nthe help he received from \u201eWir Sind Paten\u201c was manifold. It ranged from\nassistance in learning the target language (German) to socialising and making\nnew encounters, many of which bloomed into long-lasting friendships. He even\nrevealed that the characterisation \u201eLabertasche\u201c was given to him during his\nwork here by his own boss. In a sense, Aziz said that while working here he\ngained a better glimpse of his own identity in a new environment. Other than\nthat, he summed up the perks of becoming involved with \u201eWir Sind Paten\u201c by\nfocusing on the relaxing ambience and \u201ea good feeling,\u201c which stems from the\nclose contact with the rest of the volunteers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
When asked about\nwhat comes to mind when hearing the name \u201eWir Sind Paten,\u201c he declared with a\nsmirk: \u201ethe office.\u201c When asked to sum up \u201eWir Sind Paten\u201c in one word, he said\nwithout hesitation: \u201efriends.\u201c Even if this sounds peculiar to some, Aziz\nexplained that he has made many great memories with great people in this place,\nso that it has developed a sentimental value for him over the years. During our\nsmall interview, Aziz expressed his unrelenting enthusiasm for the \u201eunknown,\u201c\nwhich is a big part of the job. The \u201eunknown\u201c is, according to him, not\nsomething that should be feared, but rather something that should be cherished.\nHe opened up about the countless possibilities and situations he is confronted\nwith every day, as well as the diverse backgrounds of people who come here\nevery day asking for help or offering their services. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Still, I bet you\u2019re\ncurious about what Aziz has to say regarding new volunteers. During our\nconversation, questions such as \u201eShould someone join Wir Sind Paten?\nWhy?,\u201c \u201eWhat is the ideal profile of a\nvolunteer\/employee?\u201c and \u201eWhat can you do here?\u201c became the focus of\ndiscussion. Aziz affirmed his loyalty to \u201eWir Sind Paten\u201c and claimed he would\ncertainly recommend it to others. He listed many of the advantages of becoming\nengaged with \u201eWir Sind Paten,\u201c including the cool team that makes up the heart\nof the project, as well as the cultural diversity stemming from the different\nbackgrounds of our volunteers. In addition, Aziz referred to the wide-ranging\nevents offered, all designed to bring people together. These include:\nComputerie, free tutoring in German and English, assistance with writing\napplications or finding a house, cooking events, jam sessions and outdoor\nactivities in the summer. Regarding the question \u201eWho can get involved?,\u201c\nAziz\u2018s reply was clear and confident: \u201eeveryone who needs or can provide help.\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n
