Our open Democracy Meet-Up is a central part of the Vielfalt bestimmt! project, offering participants the opportunity to actively and continuously discuss political topics. Once a month, we gather for an evening in our office in Prager Straße 60, 04217 Leipzig to talk about current political events from Saxony, Germany, and sometimes international developments. Our project team always brings prepared topic inputs, which address current events and provide orientation. However, and most importantly, the topics suggested by the participants are also taken into account.
Since the start of the project, we have already covered a wide range of topics: from the question of what democracy means, to upcoming elections such as local and European elections, analyzing campaign posters, to topics such as fake news and disinformation. These meet-ups not only offer the chance to better understand political processes together but also provide participants with the opportunity to share their perspectives and ask questions. This creates a lively space for exchange, making politics more accessible and reducing barriers to engagement. The diverse experiences and opinions of a group that is always somewhat individually composed make these exchanges particularly valuable.
Why is this open meet-up so important?
The open meet-up creates a safe space for participants where political education is experienced in a hands-on way, and where informal discussions on socially relevant and political issues can take place. For people with a migration or refugee background, it is often challenging to access local political processes and fully understand the democratic structures in Germany. Here, they can engage in relaxed discussions, get informed, and strengthen their own democratic skills.
