How is a historical exhibition created?

The project History in motion: experience, remember, commemorate. is nearing its climax, the completion of the exhibition and its opening are imminent.

The opening of the exhibition, which deals with foreign working people and foreign students in the GDR and in Erfurt in particular, is planned for mid-February 2023 at the Erfurt premises of Soziale Dienste und Jugendhilfe gGmbH. This project is funded by the Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship.

From the beginning, all participants of the workshop phase worked towards this big day. Thus, not only a common basic historical knowledge was developed, but also historical sources from different archives were discussed in the workshops. The specificity of the everyday worlds of the foreign working people and students becomes tangible with this exhibition. In order to reach as large an audience as possible, virtual attention is paid to multilingualism by means of QR codes on the haptic exhibition.

The „double migration theme“ in particular was a major topic in the development of the exhibition content. The exhibition Migrant:innen in der DDR was developed by young people with a migration background under the guidance of a historian.

Now it is time to plan the opening of the exhibition and to set up a program. The exhibition Migrant:innen in der DDR will go on tour in Erfurt and the surrounding area from March to August 2023 and will be accompanied by trained exhibition guides at its host locations.
